XENON HANDLING
Short Arc Lamp Handling
Both the air-cooled and liquid-cooled short arc lamps contain high pressure xenon gas. Special care must be taken in the handling of these highly pressurized lamps. Whether cold at idle or while at high temperature during operation, the highly pressurized short arc lamps may unexpectedly shatter or explode. The possi-bility of an injury or fire exists if the fragments of quartz are not contained. Proper handling of the lamp is critical. The quartz body must be protected from scratches and abrasions. Even the smallest size scratch that may not be detectable to the naked eye can lead to the build up of strain leading to an explosive
failure.
The lamp must be used only in the equipment and power supply in which it was designed. The lamp must always be mounted in the correct physical and electrical orientation for which it was designed. The cooling system, whether air or liquid, and the lamp socket connectors should be checked periodically. To avoid injuries such as an electrical shock, a burn or a lamp explosion never replace a lamp if hot. Proper eye, face and skin protection must be used while handling or servicing short arc lamps. Lamp maintenance and replacement should be accomplished by qualified personnel only. Upon receipt of lamp package, the carton should be examined for damage incurred in shipping. Delivering carrier employee should sign off any apparent damages at time of receipt.
The carton should be opened fully so lamp and its plastic protective wrap can be lifted out of package with no twisting or pulling. Due to the high internal pressure of the short arc lamps, unpacking should take place in an area protected from fellow personnel. The lamp must be wiped with alcohol before placing to service. Bare skin contact with the quartz envelope must be avoided. Compounds from the skin when heated on the lamp will form permanent etching (devitrification) on the quartz surface allowing overheating in that area. Strain will build eventually causing premature catastrophic failure.
Ozone Safety
Triatomic oxygen or ozone is a by-product of the ozone producing short arc lamps. It is formed when oxygen is exposed to wavelengths lower then 210 nanome-ters of radiation. Ozone formation can be eliminated by using ozone-free quartz lamps. Certain dioxides are added to the quartz bodies of these short arc lamps, which absorb the ozone producing wavelengths.
Power Supplies
All short arc lamps should be operated on regulated power supplies designed specifically for the particular lamp being used to provide proper performance. The AC lamps use either resistive or inductive ballasts while the DC lamps use specifically designed high efficiency power supplies with high voltage ignitors. Both power supply designs must be capable of supplying a high current low voltage arc to maintain stable uniform lamp operation. Lamp life, stability, uniformity and lamp ignition are all directly dependent on a properly designed power supply.

ABOUT SUPERIOR QUARTZ ..
Since 1957, Superior Quartz Products has endeavoured to manufacture unexcelled quality
quartz lamps. At Superior, master craftsman rework technically pure grade amorphorous
non-crystalline silicone dioxide (quartz) with meticulous patience into a unique construction.
SUPERIOR HISTORY - Proudly manufacturing Lamps since 1957
1957 - Armando Losco and Edward Polinski former Westinghouse Inc. electrical engineers
founded Terrace Electronics in Verona, N.J.- manufacturing neon glow lamps and electronic
tubes.
1960 to 1961 - Terrace Electronics (neon glow lamp manufacturing division) was sold and then the company incorporated under the current
name Superior Quartz Products, Inc. (SQP). The manufacturing facility moved to Budd Lake, N.J. and now focused completely on quartz mercury
vapor lamps. Total employed at this time 4 employees.
1991 - Dennis J. joins the company full time as a production manager after graduating from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a Bachelor of
Science in Business Management.
1995 - During ORC's acquisition of Hanovia's short arc division, SQP was able to obtain Helge Austad,
Chief Engineer and developer of the horizontal xenon short arc lamp, and Mike Burke, general manager of
the air-cooled short arc division from Hanovia. With this vast wealth of knowledge, SQP embarked on its
next endeavor, air-cooled xenon short arc manufacturing. SQP first concentrated on selling to the highly technical scientific market
(Oriel Instruments) and the searchlight market (Carlisle and Finch). The company now employed 35 em- ployees.
1996 - Expands the facility to 25,000 square feet to accommodate the growing business.
1998 - SQP expands its air-cooled xenon lamp product line to encompass the large cinema market. In- cluding sizes from 150 watt to
7000 watt. SQP is also granted two United States Patents for development improvements to both UV cur- ing lamps and high-pressure
air-cooled short arc lamps. Initial discussions with Future Projections in London re the UK market.
2000 - SQP adds an additional 5000 square feet to its manufacturing facility, to be quickly filled by the newly purchased Duro-Test
liquid-cooled short arc division. Agreement with Future Projections to distribute in the UK.
2001 - In January SQP is granted IMAX approval for both the 12 and 15KW liquid cooled lamps for both 2D and 3D applications.
SX20008 lamp developed
2005 - SQP purchases 7 acres in Bethlehem, PA to begin construction
of a new 62,000 square foot manufacturing and research facility.
2006 - Stocks held in new Future Projections facility in London.
